This process is a moulding method that requires a preheated polymer to be placed into an open, heated mould cavity. The mould, closed with a top plug applies pressure to the polymer to force it to contact all areas of the mould. The pressure and heat are maintained throughout the process until the polymer is cured. Compression moulding has been designed specifically to facilitate replacing metal components with polymers and other composites.
Though the process of compression moulding mostly utilizes thermoset polymers, it is also possible to employ the process with thermoplastics as well as advanced composite thermoplastics.
A high-pressure, high- volume plastic moulding method, compression mouldingis suitable for moulding high-strength objects with complex designs and with its high production rates and short cycle, it is the preferred manufacturing method in the automotive industry.
