Blanking

Shearing processes also include piercing and blanking, in these processes a die and punch are used in the modification of webs. The terminology varies, but in both, the processes and the tools required are the same. The main difference between the two is the fact that the punched out piece in blanking is used and is called a blank, while in piercing, it is scrap. Piercing can also be called punching, and a process that uses both these techniques is often called a “pierce and blank”.
The advantages of fine blanking are:
dimensional repeatability, accuracy, and control in the process are excellent
excellent retention of part flatness
the finished edges are straighter and more superior to other processes for metal stamping
machining details is not much required
the option to add multiple features simultaneously
economical for large production runs
